How much does an air source heat pump cost to install?

The total cost of having an air source heat pump installed varies according to specific aspects of the property. As a general rule though, according to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), heat pumps cost around £14 000 to install when all aspects of the installation, such as upgrading heat emitters, are factored in.

The process begins with a qualified installer carrying out an initial visit to your property. During this visit, they will look at:

•    Your typical heating usage
•    The size of your home and room layout
•    The level and quality of insulation
•    Your existing heating system, including radiators and whether you have underfloor heating
•    The most suitable location for the heat pump
•    Location for your hot water cylinder

All of these factors, and others specific to your building, will lead to an accurate cost estimate for your installation.

According to the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), heat pumps cost around £14 000 to install when all aspects of the installation are factored in.

Are there any grants for heat pump installations?

We understand that having an air source heat pump installed is a significant investment. However, you may be able to access support with the initial set up costs through the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This provides eligible homeowners in England and Wales a discount of up to £7 500 off an air source heat pump installation. For homeowners in Scotland, the Home Energy Scotland Grant may be worth exploring and additional support is available for rural and island homes.

When looking into grants to help with the cost of an air source heat pump, check the eligibility criteria carefully and look at other support options for home improvements, such as insulation and double glazing.

How much does an air source heat pump cost to run?

In the same way that the installation cost of an air source heat pump varies home to home, the typical running costs can also vary significantly. Heat pumps are designed to be efficient and as they don’t use fossil fuels like traditional gas boilers, the overall running costs can be lower due to not having to pay daily gas standing charges at your property.

Understanding coefficient of performance (COP)

A heat pump’s efficiency can be measured by using its coefficient of performance rating (COP). This is a ratio of useful heating provided by the heat pump compared to the energy consumed to deliver it.

COP ratings are given as a numerical value. There is no limit but the higher this number is, the more efficient the heat pump will be. As an example, a COP rating of 3 means that the heat pump provides three times as much energy per unit that it consumes.

As well as COP, which provides a snapshot of your heat pump’s efficiency at one specific point, the seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) gives an indication of its efficiency throughout the year, factoring in seasonal variations, to give you a more accurate representation of your unit’s year-round performance.

Both COP and SCOP ratings are important measures that allow you to make the right decision for your home and your energy budget.
