Combi, or combination, boilers heat water directly from the mains, when a hot tap is turned on, so you don’t need a hot water cylinder or water tanks in the loft, saving valuable space. Combi boilers are best suited for homes with one bathroom. See our combi boiler range here.

Heat only boilers are also known as ‘regular’, ‘traditional’, ‘open vent’ or ‘conventional’ boilers. If you have tanks in the loft and a hot water cylinder, then you may already have a heat only boiler. If gas is piped directly into your home, you are likely to be on the mains gas network and your boiler runs on natural gas. If your gas is stored in a large tank and delivered by a tanker lorry when the gas is running low, then you are probably using LPG or liquid petroleum gas.

Where does the flue come out? The flue is the pipe that takes the waste gases and water vapour away from your boiler and disperses them safely into the air. You can usually see a white or black pipe, about 10 cms across, that comes through an outside wall close to where the boiler is sited inside. In some cases, the flue may go straight up, either through the roof or a flat roof.
