Benchmark for Installers

What is Benchmark?

Benchmark is a nationally recognised scheme that places responsibility on both manufacturers and installers to ensure best practice in the installation, commissioning and servicing of domestic heating and hot water products in line with the Building Regulations in England and Wales. It was developed to drive up standards in the industry and is managed and promoted by the Heating and Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC).

It also gives homeowners written evidence that their installation has been carried out to a high standard by an installer who is qualified and committed to providing a service in line with the Benchmark Code of Practice.

Benchmark for Installers

The Benchmark Scheme covers heating and hot water equipment and related products, including:

  • Gas fired heating and hot water systems
  • Hot water storage cylinders
  • Water treatment products
  • Solar thermal systems
  • Heat pumps
  • Oil and gas cookers/boilers
  • Warm air heating systems
  • Micro-CHP

The Benchmark Commissioning Checklist can be found at the back of the boiler instruction manual, along with the servicing record. Installers are required to complete it to show they have competently installed and commissioned products in line with manufacturers’ instructions.

The completed checklist provides documented evidence that the customer’s boiler has been correctly installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and complies with the appropriate Building Regulations.

When completing the checklist, the installer also records that they have shown the householder how to use the boiler and controls.

How Benchmark affects the boiler warranty

The terms and conditions for Baxi's parts and labour warranties include the following requirements:

  • The installer must complete the Benchmark checklist when he finishes installing the boiler. We may ask to see the Benchmark checklist if you make a claim while your boiler is under warranty
  • The warranty must be registered within 30 days of installation
  • The boiler must be serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer
