What is an air source heat pump and how does it work?

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) work by extracting heat from the air and using it to heat your home. The process uses a refrigerant that absorbs the heat and transfers it indoors, even in chilly weather, with the steps effectively reversing to help keep the property cool during the summer. 

 
In this article, we will look a bit closer at some of the key parts of an ASHP and how your unit works to provide consistent comfort all-year round. 

 

Air Source Heat Pumps Explained

 

ASHPs are situated outside the property and are typically either ground or wall-mounted depending on individual characteristics of the building and the landscape. Heat is drawn from the ambient air across what is known as a heat exchanger, with the refrigerant inside superheated by a compressor. This is much like the process that always keeps your fridge cool.  


The generated heat is transferred into water through a plate heat exchanger and circulated around your heating system, including to radiators and underfloor heating, in a similar way to a traditional boiler. The big difference is that the energy comes from a renewable source.

 

Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps

 

Compared to traditional heating methods, air source heat pumps can deliver up to four times more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume. By extracting the warmth that is already in the air, rather than utilising fossil fuels, ASHPs can be ideal if you are looking to do your bit for the environment. 

  
ASHPs also provide a consistent level of heating that can be easily configured to suit your comfort and the property. This removes the need to run short cycles of the system, which can cause greater wear and tear and use more energy, contributing to a possible rise in your costs. It is estimated that ASHPs could save more than £1 000 each year when compared to electric storage heaters and around £1 400 compared to LPG boilers. 


Typically, ASHPs are thought to work for around 20 years, five years longer than a gas boiler, with less maintenance required as well. If you also have other additions like solar panels and have quality home insulation, these savings and benefits can be even greater.

 

Considerations for Installing an Air Source Heat Pump

 

Air source heat pumps will need to be installed correctly and with unique considerations to keep in mind. The location of your unit is one of the most important. Ensure that there is plenty of clear space around it, as this allows air to be drawn in effectively and maximises performance. You may also need to consider whether there will be an impact on neighbouring properties, including noise and the visual aesthetics of the unit. While ASHPs are generally quiet, they are not silent, and should be no louder than 42db according to the latest regulations.


Similarly, it is advisable to position your unit away from bedroom windows for much the same reason. In the case of ground-mounted ASHPs, ensure they are not in areas of high footfall or where they are likely to cause a trip or fall hazard. These units can be blended in with the landscape for a more discreet appearance, if needed.   


Before looking into getting an air source heat pump installed for your property, it is important to consider your current insulation, as this will further improve its efficiency and effectiveness.

 

Can Air Source Heat Pumps Work in All Weather Conditions?

 

Even in the depths of Winter when there is less heat in the air for it to draw on, your air source heat pump will still work effectively. Most modern ASHPs are designed to operate in in temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius, as long as they are maintained properly and key components are clear of snow and ice. 


ASHPs are also built to be resilient to other weather conditions. So long as your unit has a good source of airflow and is positioned above areas where rainwater could gather, it will be able to work effectively all throughout the year, even when our weather keeps us guessing!
