What is BREEAM?

The building research establishment environmental assessment method - BREEAM.

BREEAM is a voluntary assessment scheme which works to raise awareness amongst owners, occupiers, designers and operators of the benefits of sustainability.

It helps them to cost-effectively adopt sustainable solutions and provides market recognition of their achievements.

BREEAM takes into account a range of categories that evaluate energy and water use, health and wellbeing, pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes. Buildings are rated and certified on a scale of ‘Pass’, ‘Good’, ‘Very Good’, ‘Excellent’ and ‘Outstanding’.

Although a voluntary scheme, some planning authorities and many end-user clients insist on BREEAM assessment and often specify a minimum rating as part of their procurement processes.

The following are relevant to building services specification:

  • BREEAM New Construction
  • BREEAM In-Use
  • BREEAM Refurbishment

Assessment credit points can be gained for low NOx emissions from fossil-fuelled space and water heating plant. Further credit points can also be gained under the “innovation” category for the considered implementation of new technologies.

Baxi understands the importance of ensuring products are energy efficient and makes low NOx products that qualify for the maximum number of BREEAM points. Find out more about our ultra-low NOx products.
